Lady Mary Crawley is not the heir to Downton Abbey, nor, sadly, to her father's earldom. She joins us just after the death of her fiancé (and second cousin) Patrick Crawley in the Titantic disaster. Lady Mary's Mama and Granny (the Countess and Dowager Countess of Grantham, respectively) are for once in their lives united in a quest to break the entail. Unfortunately, Mary's chances aren't good, and the estate will likely pass to the new heir, Matthew Crawley, an unknown Manchester solicitor.

Lady Mary is the eldest daughter of Robert, Earl of Grantham, and Cora, the American-born Countess of Grantham. She lives at Downton Abbey, the Earl's country estate in Yorkshire, with her parents, two younger sisters--Lady Edith and Lady Sybil--and a full staff of servants, who by far outnumber the members of the Earl's family. Lady Mary enjoys fine food and drink, fashion, horseback riding, and besting Edith at everything. She's beautiful and she knows it, and she's not above leveraging her beauty to gain status and power through marriage. Though many of the servants think she's incredibly snobbish, and Edith think she's heartless, Mary is mostly just... bored.

Lady Mary was born in 1892, during the final decade of Queen Victoria's reign as monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. At twenty years old, she is tall and slender, with fashionably pale skin complemented by dark hair and lashes and brown eyes. Though raised primarily in Yorkshire, Mary speaks with an aristocratic accent and possesses aristocratic manners, even when she's insulting someone. Mary's clothes are generally exquisite... and expensive, and quite unlike the former monarch, she's doesn't much like wearing mourning.
